2023 Members’ Survey

2023 Members’ Survey

We carried out a survey of our members in 2023 to find out what we should be doing differently to continue to meet our members’ objectives in the future. The results of the survey have been tabulated and summarised.

At this stage the summary consists only of the responses from members: at some future point we may be able to expand the summary to include any proposed changes to the way the Shed is run or the facilities or services that we can offer.

COMMENTS WELCOME AS FEEDBACK TO HUGH AND MARTIN, PLEASE.

Following a brilliant week 1 where 12 people attended Martin’s Raspberry Pi demonstration and fed ideas into Hugh’s discussion re potential outings (wet, dry, and both!)

Tomorrow we will have enough equipment to break into small groups and get hands on with Turing Tumble (TT), marble computer, emulators of TT on iPads, Raspberry Pi, and Pico. This hands on session should engage with everyone and over a few weeks we can plan projects.

The TT emulator is free online and if you have a tablet or pc you will be able to practice at home. There are about 40 tutorials and I’m getting to my “pen pusher” limits at about 23. Group work will definately be required.

I have a couple of iPads that can be borrowed by arrangement

We will ensure we have physical breaks and opportunities to swap tasks. Hope to see you there

AGM

AGM

Great turnout today and thanks to Iain, Ali and John for their organisational skills. We certainly had some good debate around topics such as membership, activities, lady members and day trips as well as an update on Stewart’s finger, his shed blackout ,and other “incidents”. Thankfully his exploits have been appropriately rewarded!

It was very nice to see that we continue to attract new members even though we are still in Covid territory! We have a lot of good people who have some extremely interesting ideas so upwards and onwards.

Preparation for building

Preparation for building

Some of the members have been preparing the way to allow ground works to commence with a view to getting started with a new workshop / store. We have some ideas about what we want to do, so the first stage was to mark out the ground, clear away the pallets that had been deposited there, and get ready to bring in a contractor to level the site in preparation for installing the accommodation.

Hard at work?
Ground pegged out
Pallets cleared away
Danger – man at work!

Free Book Library

Free Book Library

We have been approached by a school PTA with a request to build an enclosure that could hold books to provide a free “library” service, where people could swap or borrow books. This would ideally be located in the grounds of the associated local primary school. The requirements are:

  • Outdoor storage for books;
  • Should be enclosed (weatherproof);
  • Brightly coloured and / or decorated;
  • Resembling a house if possible;
  • Clear glass- or plastic-fronted for visibility, if possible. Safety glass or polycarbonate would be ideal;
  • It should display the words “Free Library” or similar;
  • Shelved to accommodate a several books of different sizes (dimensions to be agreed).

Agenda for Meeting – Comments Please!

Agenda for Meeting – Comments Please!

Please review and provide (constructive) comments below on the notes that John has pulled together for the Lothian meeting of Men’s Sheds on 9 July. This is to discuss aspects of the impact of Covid 19 on Sheds, and consider options for restarting Sheds with appropriate measures in place to protect members, once this is possible within guidelines.
