We have been approached by a school PTA with a request to build an enclosure that could hold books to provide a free “library” service, where people could swap or borrow books. This would ideally be located in the grounds of the associated local primary school. The requirements are:
- Outdoor storage for books;
- Should be enclosed (weatherproof);
- Brightly coloured and / or decorated;
- Resembling a house if possible;
- Clear glass- or plastic-fronted for visibility, if possible. Safety glass or polycarbonate would be ideal;
- It should display the words “Free Library” or similar;
- Shelved to accommodate a several books of different sizes (dimensions to be agreed).
Below are a couple of examples:
It may be possible to start with a wardrobe, a cupboard, a kitchen unit, a dresser, or a chest of drawers, or similar, and adapt it to meet the requirements.
Members of the Shed are asked to consider whether they could take on some or all of the work of building the library, and / or offer suggestions about how to go about the work. Please leave any relevant comments against this post.
Thank you!
I have 2 divan single beds and 1 divan double bed which have sturdy wooden frames, would these be of use to anyone for a project? Turned on their side and shelves inserted they could be used for wee libraries? I also have a bookcase which is 3’ x 3’ x 10”.
Bill,
I have taken some time to get back to you but am getting to a position after our house move where I’m going to make the wee library so would like to take you up on the offer of wood, probably using some of the divan wood to frame and mount the bookcase to a level yet to be agreed.
If you’ve not got rid of the wood I’ll liaise with you on taking it away to my garden to work on if that is ok.
Cheers
Alister
Hello Alister,
Please accept my apologies, I thought that I had replied to you on Thursday but obviously done something stupid and not sent my reply.
I still have the beds but I have arranged for a Council uplift on Friday 26th but you are still welcome to them. The beds and bookcase are at my father-in-law’s house in Oxgangs. I intend to go there tomorrow afternoon, so if you would like to assess how many you would like, just text or WhatsApp.
Best wishes
Bill
