Promoting well-being for men and supporting our community
Pentlands Men’s Shed exists to promote wellbeing for its members, and to attract new members by promoting wellbeing as its main purpose. For some people, that may be project activities, but for others it may be playing board or other games, gardening, learning, or just a cup of coffee and a chat. We are making Christmas Trees that we will sell for Shed funds this year (the order book is now closed due to unprecedented demand). Different designs are possible, with either free-standing bases, or stakes to be driven into the ground. Here is a sample. Prices will depend on the size and the material they are made of. We would supply them unpainted, so they can be any colour that you want to make them. Buy one for each of the kids or grandkids, along with a paintbrush and some paint!

We are nothing if not multi-skilled. When asked whether he could make some boot jacks to help someone remove their muddy boots, Stewart’s answer was – unsurprisingly – “Yes”. He ended up making two! This wasn’t a completely simple solution, though, as he had to join pieces of timber to give him the sizes of materials that he needed. We think the result was worth it, and we can’t even see the join!

When “The Meeting Place” asked us to make some games for their members, Stewart stepped up and produced a bumper-sized frame for the group members to use when playing “Play Your Cards Right”, based on the popular television game show. The Meeting Place is organised by one of our members, and is intended to give Dementia sufferers and their carers somewhere to get together every week. By all accounts the game has proved very popular!

The Friends Of Muirwood Park is a group of local residents who work to improve the amenities in the park to benefit the community. Some of the installations in the park were in a poor state of repair, and the group had been struggling to find tradespeople who were willing and able to repair them, so Pentlands Men’s Shed were approached and asked whether we could help. A subgroup of members took on the project, with impressive results.

When Hugh asked for help to convert an unwanted wheelie bin into a mobile toolbox, Stewart stepped up with his engineering expertise. Hugh now has a bin that holds his gardening equipment securely, and also slides easily into his car for longer journeys.

Some of the members have been preparing the way to allow ground works to commence with a view to getting started with a new workshop / store. We have some ideas about what we want to do, so the first stage was to mark out the ground, clear away the pallets that had been deposited there, and get ready to bring in a contractor to level the site in preparation for installing the accommodation.
One of our members repaired (or re-made, by the look of it!) a couple of tables for Nether Currie Primary School over the Easter holidays. He also painted their shed. Lovely work, Geoff! Photos below.
