Premises! The story in pictures.

Premises! The story in pictures.

We obtained an old modular building to use as our new premises, and while it needed a lot of work, it was delivered to the site on 4 June 2021. With great excitement from all involved, it was swung into place by an expert truck / crane operator, and the real fun started as we refurbished it. This work has taken a while, but we now have a fully functional Shed workshop (with extensions and annexes!) and a first class meeting place for our members.

Protect your extension leads

Protect your extension leads

A tip courtesy of Hugh: To deter people from stealing extension leads from campsites, gardens, etc, wrap a bit of electrical tape round them in a few places. This makes them look old and repaired – which makes them unattractive to most passers-by. Most people only want new ones or ones in good condition!

Currie Primary School Projects update

Currie Primary School Projects update

The Covid Pandemic imposed a huge amount of delay but Pentlands Men’s Shed eventually delivered some long-awaited projects for Currie Primary School. The school provided some wonderful feedback for the work carried out, and you can see the finished results below:

Sensory Wall & Finger Guards

Sensory Wall & Finger Guards

Stewart has made a “Sensory Wall” for a local playgroup. ‘What’s a Sensory Wall?’ I hear you ask. An excellent question! It’s a board with all sorts of items attached. These make sounds, have different textures, move in different ways, and are all intended to give the children something to stimulate their minds. You’ll see what it is in the photos below.

While at the playgroup, Stewart also fitted “finger guards” to some doors, to prevent a recurrence of a child getting fingers caught when a door was closed.

Turing Tumble

Turing Tumble

One of our members brought in a “Turing Tumble” to test the logic and brainpower of other members. This is a type of digital computer that uses ball bearings rather than electronics to achieve the desired results, using pure logic to send the bearings to the desired end location. It’s harder than you might think, and very addictive!

Co-op Local Community Fund

Co-op Local Community Fund

Pentlands Men’s Shed was selected as one of three local good causes to get some funding from the Co-op Local Community Fund in 2020/2021. The amount depended on how many people who shop at the Co-op chose to support our cause. Thanks to the fantastic support from the community, we have been awarded the magnificent sum of £1495.22 for the year.

Playgroup Shed

Playgroup Shed

We received a request to help a local playgroup to dismantle an old shed and erect a new one. In the end this required an area of ground to be levelled, slabs laid, and then the shed to be installed. Well done to the team who made this all happen. The photos below show some of the guys working on the build of the shed. How many shedders does it take to build a shed?
