Hi

Shed Notes 21st January

Before I forget and for those who do not read to the end of the notes there is a standing zoom meeting on a Friday for those who wish to join. Details are at the bottom of this news notes.

Another week gone by but at least we can all talk about the weather as well as Covid in the past few days which could be a slight change in the daily pattern of things.
43 years ago on a cold icy morning after a good few inches of snow on overnight ice a Midlothian snowplough and gritting team obligingly cleared Riccarton Drive so that a large pantechnicon from London could get into the street and move us into our new home in Edinburgh. Yesterday 43 years and one week later I was out early clearing the snow from pavements and drive so that Kerrs small removal van could get alongside the kerb to start our removal to a few streets away. An Edinburgh Council plough eventually appeared on Riccarton Mains road mid morning so I then had to clear from the plough track to the pavement so that they could get close to unload!! Changed days and services from the council!! The rest of the move will continue weather permitting and a lot of stuff will have to go somewhere soon!
I’ve not been keeping up with emails and such like this week as Virgin were going to make our changeover on Tuesday but in fact cut me off on Monday midday so that was me in the no phone, no internet and no emails but at least the mobile was still working – again quite a change from 43 years ago when only the phone was available to get a quick reply and I seem to remember that solicitors would only accept written missives, not even a fax ( where have they gone?). However that said by Tuesday evening Virgin had me all connected up at the new premises with same phone number and all the other services intact – so far so seamless. The cynic in me thinks they must have heard that there is a bit of competition around these days but I must say the service was first class and all for £20 fixed fee over and above my existing deal which I wished to keep.
I did have a phone call from Keith which actually alerted me to the fact the phone was working.
He’s keeping fine and was wondering if we should do something as part of the shed with the old Currie library – I said that as far as I knew it was still very much a going concern with lots of other services happening from and in there when Covid allowed. I hope I’m right as I’ve got library books which should have gone back last March!
Covid is raging in the Highlands – all the communities who escaped it before are now hit pretty bad and of course people are still dying from it and also at a younger and younger age. Hopefully the vaccines programme and current lockdown will help overtake the situation but even Boris now seems to have lost his gung ho attitude to getting rid of it and a lot of business premises up north are being much more cautious than they were before even going beyond the lockdown proceedures. My cousin had it pretty bad and was in Raigmore but thankfully got back home. Still weak but otherwise ok. His wife also took it but their young daughter did not. He was working for Scottish Power on a windfarm site up near Lairg which Scottish Power deemed essential and had a large squad from Stirling working on it and travelling to it. Even after he caught the virus they did not stop work so a lot of people, including him ceased their contract.
I’ve had a few more wishful thoughts about the shed yesterday and today as I now have a skip and digger outside our new house trying to make a driveway in among the chaos of moving and weather. There is no way I was going to put them off having waited months to get a slot for the contractor to start but I did think on hijacking the mini digger and taking it over to the shed one night!!!
Now I think I’ll go and try and sort out a few more boxes before trying to find a bed!
Cheers to all, and if you have read this far remember the Zoom meeting tomorrow the details of which are on the shed website and on the bottom of this newsletter.
Regards to all, stay safe and well and be patient, vaccines are coming to us soon, my neighbour had hers today up at the Pentlands Medical Centre and some of our older shed members may also have received it already – let us know so we can look forward to the experience.
