Hi

Shed Notes 1st October

Another week and another month gone by and it seems we are not moving forward with keeping the virus under control. I have deliberately not made any moves regarding work at the Scout Premises this week just because I was not at all sure how the situation would develop. Unfortunately it has not developed well so despite a dry day tomorrow I’ll be sticking to the zoom in the morning.

John sent me some Nativity details during the week and I’ve passed them to the Colinton Community to feed in to their meeting in October. We won’t hear more on that until they have had that meeting and they have been warned that we may not be able to do anything if circumstances change. They are aware of this which is why they are planning an outside ‘hands off’ Christmas display and I’ve just heard that there will be no German Market in Princess St. this year so maybe they are doing the right thing in planning their activities to meet whatever circumstances are in force by that time.

Lyall has set up Pentlands Men’s Shed on Amazon Smile so if you use it you can specify Pentlands Mens Shed as the charity you wish to benefit. I have not yet scanned the sheets which I promised for the website and will try and do it this weekend. Also I have not tried to use it yet as I’m trying to clear things out, not purchase more, at the moment. (We are going to be moving house hopefully in the near future so I’ve got to seriously downsize!) I will have to acquire more space at our new premises and am in the market for a large shed. Unfortunately half the country seems to be of the same mind at the moment and manufacture and delivery dates are into mid January with all of the suppliers I’ve been recommended. I have the concrete base laid, did that last weekend with the present owner of the new house (son in law!) just to make sure it was done to (my) spec. Maybe I should inspect Allister's new shed and if suitable get a quotation?!

I’ve spent the last two days scoping out charity shops and delivering stuff to them before we get caught out with any future lockdown. They all seem very keen to get whatever is going but are constrained with what they can take and how much as all has to be quarantined for 48hrs before they can sort for sale. I feel it is the best time to try and recycle while it can still be used. I’m also building up a library of workshop books for the Shed and will hold on to them until we actually get a shed as they could be useful. Of course doing anything like this always ends up with spending time reading the books! One I have is on how to repair Victorian Architecture (leather Bound) which I think belonged to my grandfather who was a stonemason in the north of Scotland and travelled around the country living where they worked while repairing/building. Often they also opened quarries locally to get the stone they needed. Probably no good for the shed but nice to keep for posterity. With fantastic sketches of the structures involved.

I hope everyone is still safe and well and getting to grips with the changing circumstances. At least we still have a little freedom and I hope it goes forward from that and not backwards as we progress into Autumn..

Regards to all
Alister
