Hi

Once again it is Iain on the keyboard this week, with Ali back up North at Portmahomack for a few days.

The past few weeks have been a bit unusual at the Shed, with presentations and visits taking precedence over project work. The most recent visitor was Gordon MacDonald MSP, who took time to hear our concerns over reduced or even the removal of government funding for the Shed movement in Scotland, and then looked around the Shed and met several members. Hopefully his support for the Shed will continue into the future.

The non-project side of the Shed is kicking into action with Martin and Hugh preparing to show interested members how to use Raspberry Pi computers. If you are not sure what these are, they are tiny computers into which you can plug a mouse, a keyboard, and a screen, and program them to carry out tasks that can range from the very simple to quite sophisticated. If you want to learn more about computers and how they work, or how to write computer programs, then it would be well worth talking to Martin and Hugh, possibly as early as tomorrow!

We have also been asked to help the British Heart Foundation to assemble furniture in one of their stores, and Jan and Ali have offered their services. I look forward to hearing how that goes!

The kindling continues to be a real money-spinner for the Shed, with large quantities having been sold over the last few weeks, and similarly large quantities of bags having been filled through the hard work of our members. Unfortunately, I've been limited in my ability to help because of a nasty case of tennis elbow preventing me from using an axe. That's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it!

Now, a last-minute reminder - the next meeting of the Lothian Men's Shed Network is on Tuesday 31 January at 10.30 at Musselburgh Men’s Shed, which meets at Our Lady of Loretto & St. Michael's, 17 Newbigging, Musselburgh EH21 7AJ. If you are interested in attending, please let Tim Green at the SMSA know (email Dev1@scottishmsa.org.uk).

Finally, may I offer Scott our best wishes as he has been somewhat unwell recently, including a spell in hospital. On behalf of your friends in the Shed, Scott, get well soon, and we look forward to seeing you again at the Shed before too long.
Best Regards,

Iain Millar
