Hi
Shed Notes 19th January 2023

The ‘mainly inside’ jobs are continuing in the Skinner Household while the hope for slightly warmer and less slippy conditions outside remains. This weekend we are going north again so I expect to be going into the snow about Dalwhinnie!
Tomorrow at the Shed Gordon Macdonald MSP will be visiting us and Douglas, Finlay and Yasmine will also be coming along having had permission from the school and their parents. Hopefully we will have a good turnout and, although I’ve not heard from Rab I’m hoping he will be able to take along the PC and powerpoint with the history of the shed by way of what can be done with some hard work and help from the SMSA and community. My take on Gordon’s visit is to try and convince him to see the point of subsidising (not funding!) SMSA so that they can talk to parliament on behalf of Sheds otherwise they are going to be bombarded by individual sheds trying to make the same point while the parliament struggles to re-organise social care in a sensible and inclusive fashion without the proper inputs.
Shug the Social (aka Hugh) has volunteered to champion the warm and coffee / tea fuelled “Non tools” activities. Please lend him support and Ideas of what you would like to do. He says 'Initially we are very socially, and from first principles, going to learn how to build an open source Raspberry Pi computer and get it to do useful things. This will be collaborative and no computer knowledge is required. If you can count to 1 you will be able to chip in comments, useful or otherwise. We have acquired the basic “gubbins (aka motherboard)” and Martin has volunteered to identify what bits and bobs we need. Several people have already shown interest and our Treasurer has promised his expert support. To make sure we have enough to do/learn from day 1 (Friday 27 Jan) we will also use “Turing Tumble” our marble powered computer, and our new Raspberry Pico starter kit with 100s of projects / tutorials to grow our confidence. Once we are up and running you will be able to borrow stuff and show your grandchildren or other friends your new skills.'
Thanks for doing this Hugh, all the equipment can be kept in our padlocked cupboards under the window bench inside the room in the hall where there is also clean space to work while the hammering, sawing and whatever other work is going on outside.
Last Friday we had an excellent turnout for a talk from Friends of the Pentlands and on that Friday and the following Monday we also sold another 30 or 40 bags of firewood. The trailer of wood I collected was all unloaded on the Monday as the weather was better. It was stacked in the store which is gradually taking shape as a store and not a dumping place. Please remember that if you are looking for a piece of wood, or a shelf or whatever send a message via what’s app and see what’s available before you go to B&Q or Wickes or whatever. If we have it, it will be cheaper than other outlets!
That’s it for tonight, hope you are managing to keep away from the colds and Flu and all the other bugs normal for a ‘normal’ winter. Jan was a bit ‘peely wally’ on Monday and left early - maybe he was just suffering from slab laying deprivation given the weather!!. Hopefully that was the case and you are back up to par Jan. I have no more news of Scott so hopefully he’s now on the mend too.
Best regards, hope to see some of you tomorrow.
