Hi

It's Iain here again, as Ali is away up North this week. It has been another typical autumn week - lovely days, and torrential rain, almost on a day-about basis. I am walking the Fife Coastal Path this autumn / winter with a couple of friends (and Meg, the labrador). We had a super walk from Tentsmuir Forest to St Andrews on Monday - then got just about drowned in the rain around Livingston on Wednesday.

Work at the Shed has continued steadily this week. Last Friday started off rather wet so we continued with breaking up some of the old pallets and de-nailing the wood, allowing it to dry in the Shed over the weekend. Alistair, Murray and others continued this work on Monday so that all the pallet debris has now been cleared from the patio and the wood sorted into ‘keep’ and ‘firewood’ bundles and moved inside to dry. All the stripwood cluttering the floor of the container was removed and cleaned up by trimming off the splintered ends to make it safer and more usable. This was then put back into the container to dry off.

Jim, Jan and Martin continued with the slabbing on Monday with another 4 cleaned up and laid, so the patio is now nearing completion. John spent time on Monday cutting out small Xmas trees to sell at the open week, and hopes to continue this work on Friday.

We have also been very fortunate in getting funding from Currie Community Council for two banners, which look great - Thanks to Allister MacKillop for organising this. They will also be featured during the open week.

Talking of the open week, just a reminder that this will take place from Tuesday 22 November to Monday 28 November, between (probably) 10.00 am and 4.00 pm. During this time we hope to raise awareness of the Shed within the community, perhaps attract some future members, and hopefully raise some Shed funds by selling Christmas "artifacts" and kindling. We will be asking members to volunteer to come along for a few hours during the week if they are available, to welcome any visitors and just talk to them about the Shed and what we do. Let's use the next couple of Fridays to get some details sorted out for the week.

In other news:
  • Stewart asked to make ten more dog sniffer boxes for two more dog schools. You need to see them to understand! He has also been asked to repair sensory boards at Currie Nursery that have been played with to destruction, add extra bolts to gates to stop kids escaping, and a couple of other jobs. He suggests that the sensory boards could be removed from the playground and repaired at the Shed during open week - something to do between visitors!
  • Stewart also helped Graham White to fit a new blade to his bench saw and rip some heavy timber beams down to size for the installation of new double glazed windows . He also demonstrated to Graham the use of a router to make dado joints to strengthen the window frame.
  • Alister "2 sheds" has been to Murrayburn Primary School to discuss their request for a mud kitchen, which will be built over the next few months.
  • Iain obtained some re-usable fence timber for the shed, from a neighbour who is getting their garden re-designed. There may be some more before the work is complete.
I'd like to offer my commiserations to any of our members who are laid up with the various bugs that are doing the rounds just now. Stewart has been out of action with flu, and Allistair MacKillop has also been unwell. Stay safe, guys, and get better before you start doing too much again.

And finally for this week, if any members have not been able to get to the Shed for a while, we would love to see you again if you are able. Remember that we don't just do DIY and project work, and that the purpose of the Shed is primarily to do with men's well-being, whatever that means for individuals. We look forward to welcoming you back!
Best Regards,
