Hi
It’s been a mixed weather week but work was done despite the rain and a couple of (hopefully) minor injuries. Stewart managed to put his back out while putting on his workboots om Monday so that was not a good start to the school work. Brian did something similar at the shed stripping pallets. I know Stewart is still struggling hopefully Brian is on the mend but if they are at the shed tomorrow they will be on tea duty!. Remember you can all just come for a cup of tea if you are able. The Currie Primary school fence and both gates are now complete, thanks to Rab, Alastair, Stewart and Ron helping on this last part of the project. It’s good to get it all done and now I can get the final bill in to them. The headteacher and Fiona, (now of Select Driving School) have told me they plan a ‘proper’ C&B news article plus a get together with ourselves at the school to take photos etc so watch this space.
I’m going to be off from Saturday for the next week or so so thought that I’d get up to speed with making some stuff for the open day. Started making a couple of clocks with Keith’s breadboards and started turning the hardwood offcuts of newel posts Jim had given me to take fancy tealighters which I'd found in a charity shop. Was getting on really well until I managed to break the tailstock of my lathe and it’s not repairable unless my son can machine a new one. As the lathe is about 70 years old I think I may be spending a few days on ebay looking for a part.
Iain has intimated the dates for our shed open week as Tuesday 22nd November through to Monday 28th November. He has not put times in but lets say 1000-1600 each day for discussion. We will need to ensure that at least two persons are available at all times and to start the ball rolling I would hope to be there for at least part of each day. We can probably do minor work if there are no visitors so time will not be wasted. I would also encourage all of our less active members to come along and see how we have been getting on, remake acquaintances and hopefully get back into the swing of things. We have a new member since I last wrote Alec (NOT Alastair, Allister or Alister!) so welcome to the shed. Jan is planning a ‘party piece’ for the shed to be given at a Monday meeting Place party soon so be prepared to learn your lines when he approaches you to take part – over to you Jan!
We have been approached by Friends of the Pentlands to make things for them and also repair two seats for Currie and Juniper Green Residents. They are prepared to pay for the materials involved but we need to have a discussion on how we cost this, how we then obtain the wood for the price we have quoted etc. Prices are going through the roof and if we have to purchase specialist wood I think we need to measure up, obtain prices then go back to the client with a budget price before we order anything and even then have a proviso that this can increase. There is something to be said for keeping to pallet wood as much as possible for most of what we do but that is not always possible as we know from the school fence where alternative second hand wood was available but it took a lot of it and we were scrabbling to use every last length in the right place. Lets discuss this tomorrow and then get it incorporated into our ongoing project list. I was fortunate with the school fence that most of the hardware was purchased in 2019!
That’s it for tonight, now off to do a search on the internet for a lathe part, but I’ve just realised that my son has the same but newer (about 50 years old!) coronet lathe so maybe that bit is interchangeable, at least on a temporary basis.
Regards to all, take care, get your extra covid and flu jabs if you’ve not already done so and stay safe.
