Hi
Another busy week both at shed and at home, both linked as now we have a store at the shed I can start to move stuff being held for us in my workshop to its rightful place. Last Friday Jan and Alistair trenched in an electric underground cable I had acquired between shed and store and on Monday Rab and I fitted a switchboard for it inside the store. Once I get the socket and lights I’ll ask Grant to come and fit it all together for us!
Jan and Alistair also did a trial laying of slabs at the store entrance. In the heavy rain this week the slabs held up well and water was running under as well as over them so I’ve got some more ducting to feed in to the front of the store to ensure the water goes away from under the store and downslope away from the immediate footings. So some more digging chaps before the slabs finally get positioned. This is partly because we moved the water barrel to the other end of the shed and the water is now running from this rhone straight to ground. The other one is going into ducting under the store.
On Monday Rab and myself had a go at erecting shelves that we prepared with help from Stewart and John on the Friday and the whole back of the store is now shelved so John has a plan to start moving some of the wood and paint out of the workshop into there tomorrow. I’ve already today put in some bins for scrap metal and discussed with John a ‘ladder’ set of shelving which hopefully Rab and myself will erect and fit tomorrow so that we can also store long lengths of wood sensibly.
In case some of you are thinking 'what am I going to do or can do ' there is two carcases for the primary school gates awaiting cladding. I made them over the week and took them across today but whether we can start on them tomorrow or not will depend on numbers and other activities of tidying up, but if we don’t get round to it please book your place on the team for another day. While collecting the wood for the gate carcases and the underground cable (all free donations) I was also offered a Pole Vice, No Stewart it is nothing to do with Pole Dancers but maybe you can explain to us tomorrow what it is? I have to admit I had never heard the name but when I saw it I recognised I had seen one before. It is largely used for metal but it’s ours if we want it and have the knowledge to use it and the space to store it. I look forward to a learning tutorial tomorrow and no cheating by looking up the internet tonight! We also need to make a security fence round the end of our container which is on the overhang. Those involved in doing the one for the Scout Cabin will be able to do that I hope. We have good polyphenol treated boarding which has come off the scaffolding platforms which can be profiled for the slopes.
Tim Green, development manager for the SMSA and (?) formerly with Age Concern Scotland hopes to come and see us on Friday 2nd September. It will be good to see Tim again, perhaps get this JCB Mens Shed business sorted and also let him see how far we have progressed. Tomorrow can be a dress rehearshal for this visit by meeting in the Hall first, signing our register, having a cup of tea or coffee and then getting down to the business of the day which largely will be the start of the tidy up in preparation for Tim’s visit.
If we start our ‘Formal Friday’ in this way we are registered in for insurance purposes and we will have paid our sub for coffee if we want any (I pay by putting in a £5.00 or £10.00 note as do others so don’t be afraid to do that and then have ‘free’ beverage until your credit runs out). We’re not checking, it is an honesty box but if it is empty and Lyall has not removed the surplus cash then it is difficult to replenish the wherewithall for our beverages and nothing goes towards our next years insurance bill.
Iain has responded to the request from the Health speaker but has not heard back yet with a date. Tim will be our first 'Guest' so it will be good to have a practice with him and lets have some more ideas for the winter months.
That’s it for this week, take care and I hope to see some of you tomorrow,
Regards
Alister
