Hi

Another epistle from Iain this week - I've tried (with only limited success) to keep it a bit more brief than last week's!

Ongoing activity
  • On Friday we had a visit from Su Millar (no relation), who is hoping to set up a Shed in the Southside of Edinburgh. This will probably be a Men's Shed rather than a Community Shed, although that has still to be finalised. She is visiting a number of Sheds around the Lothians, and seemed impressed by what we have achieved, and how many active members we have.
  • Within the past week Alastair 2-Sheds has painted the end door of the Scout Hall - a part of the ongoing maintenance that we do for the Scouts - and finished planting the blackthorn hedge. Stewart has continued to extend the "cleat" system for tool storage, with a holder for the nail gun.
Planned / Future activity
  • You may have seen the WhatsApp discussion about Currie Primary School gardening. If you are free on Wednesday and would like to help, please come along to help tidy up and refresh the garden in the Atrium. This is likely to take several weeks, so don't worry if you can't manage every week.
  • Martin has suggested that the computer group may restart off there is interest in doing something interesting indoors. Please talk to Martin if this is something you would like to do.
Income and Fund-raising
  • Kindling sales continue, with a further 25 bags sold on Monday. Please, if you are filling bags, make sure that they are filled as full as possible and contain at least 2kg of kindling. Several bags have had to be topped up before we sell them to customers, and we want to avoid short-changing anyone. More wood has been put into the container to dry off, in preparation for kindling preparation on Friday.
  • We are currently preparing an application for a grant from Pentlands Community Chest to offset part of the cost of the CCTV set-up. The Community Chest was the source of funding for the dust extraction equipment that we have in the Shed, so we are keeping our fingers crossed that we are able to get some funds again this year.
Insurance
  • As mentioned last week, our buildings insurance valuation has had to be increased to ensure that we are adequately covered in case of a disaster affecting the Shed. This has, as expected, increased the insurance costs so we need to find a further £70 to cover this, over and above the inflation-adjusted increase.
Bonfire Night etc.
  • Also following on from last week, a couple of meetings with the Police have been arranged following the bonfire night issues. Allister McKillop has a meeting with the Chief Constable and others to talk about general antisocial behaviour around the community, while Lyall and the Scouts are meeting on Friday with local officers to discuss our specific situation. If you were involved in responding to the alert on 5 November please participate in that meeting and provide any information that you can.
Have a good weekend and stay safe in this seasonably unsettled weather.
Best Regards,

Iain Millar
