Hi

Rab isn't available to write the notes this week, so it's Iain on the pen... or keyboard...

It has been another busy week for the Shed, with more to come. They say you should never explain and never apologise, but I'm sorry for the length of these notes: please do read them as they contain lots of information.

Last Friday, Davy White (Graham's dad) visited us with some of the model vehicles that he has built since he retired. The Shed members who were there were very impressed by them. More details and photos are on the website.

Ali, John, and others progressed the CCTV camera installation last Friday, and completed it during the week - well done gentlemen! A group of the other members planted the new blackthorn hedge behind the fence that runs alongside the road.

The CCTV and hedge are intended to make the Shed and its surrounding area safer from vandalism and unwanted intrusion. Unfortunately, the need for this was brought into sharp focus on bonfire night, when a group of youths stole a quantity of timber which they took away to a bonfire. Most of this has been recovered, but it highlights our vulnerability. Fortunately no wider damage was done to the Shed. Pete, the scout leader, has arranged for the police to come along to discuss the situation and obtain access to the CCTV footage. Some of the Shed members who were involved in the dealing with the events of 5 November will also be talking to the police at that time.

Coincidentally, while security is high on our collective mind, our insurance policy is due to be renewed. The trustees have looked closely at the level of cover and have identified that we are underinsured for property replacement. Rectifying this is likely to increase our annual premium on top of the inflation-based increase, so maintaining our funding will be increasingly important to cover this.

Partly for security, but also for general tidiness we need to clear up our site and remove our materials from the Scout Hall side of the trees. We should remove loose timber from open areas, and organise our storage to prevent future theft of our stuff. In the meantime we should not collect any more timber (including pallets) until we have the site in a better state to receive them. The Scouts have arranged for a skip to be put on site next week: please note that this is NOT for our use without their explicit say-so.

On a more positive note, Ali and Lyall have now installed a BBQ on site, so we have the opportunity to have a Shed social event based around that.

Now, here's a request for any gardening enthusiasts in the Shed. Currie Primary School are looking to have some work done in their Atrium, probably on Wednesdays. I don't have details of what we are being asked to do, however it should be interesting work. There is no need for Disclosure Scotland checks as school staff will always be present when pupils are around. If you would like to volunteer, please let Rab know, or in his absence, one of the other trustees (John, Lyall, Ali, or me).

Finally, as web developer and secretary, I get a huge amount of spam emails and adverts, most of which are either irrelevant or, in some cases, highly inappropriate. I just delete them and I don't bother anyone else with them. I did smile this week, however, when the Shed email address received an email promoting Viagra. A random email, or a targeted advertising campaign? Who knows!

I look forward to seeing as many people as possible at the Shed on Friday.

Stay safe, and have a good weekend.
Best Regards,

Iain Millar
