Hi

Some serious stuff this week everyone...

HEALTH AND SAFETY
The way we work in the shed has to change!!!
For example, the table saw – the guard MUST go back on before it is used again. This will be completed on Friday. I know there are different opinions about whether or not it is sensible (safe?) to have the guard in place, but it's there for a purpose. We would also prefer people to clean as they go using their helpers to assist, thus instilling good practice.

For those of you who don't attend regularly, the Corstorphine Men's shed had a complaint made against them concerning their Health and Safety, and are now waiting on a visit from a HSE Inspector and their chairman has already resigned as a result. So you can rest assured that we will also be in their sights, that’s why we’re doing all this now.

TOOLBOX TALKS
We would like to start toolbox talks on the various pieces of equipment we have. So every Friday and Monday an experienced user will show the rest of us how things work safely. This will be done after coffee time.

SOLVENTS CABINET
We are going to buy a proper solvents cabinet to keep the ‘nasties’ outside the shed.

DUST EXTRACTION
We need to make sure that before we start a job in the shed that entails the production of dust, we have taken the proper measures to minimise its presence. This will involve setting up the vacuum equipment prior to starting the job.

We are also going to use an updated signing in book and induction folder.

I know the whole ethos of the shed is to come together and have a bit of banter and make stuff, but we have to do it in a safe environment. And if anyone has further suggestions on how we can keep each other safe, please let me know. I don’t pretend to know it all, and I’m not afraid to accept constructive criticism and make things better for everyone.

BO'NESS & KINNEIL RAILWAY VISIT
You'll have seen the pictures etc. on the WhatsApp group chat, and it is also on the website. Personally, I thought it was a great day out and I'm looking forward to the next outing (wherever that may be), so any suggestion is welcome.

That's it for this week. Hope you are all well and I'll see you tomorrow.

Best Regards,

Rab Mason
