Hi
I'm feeling refreshed after a week of glorious weather up in the north of Scotland. I don’t think it was quite as good as Murdo’s weather in Coll and Tiree but I could tell by the photos that we were both enjoying a more relaxed lifestyle including getting ideas for using pallets ‘as they come’ to make things which work without a lot of effort.
I went up to the bird hide at the North Esk reservoir today to finish off the wee job we were doing for the Friends of the Pentlands. Iain had completed his bit on the window openers a few weeks ago but I was not able to go at the same time. I have now completed the handle and bolt on the door but had to forcibly remove one of the temporary screws I had put in using considerable force as someone had bent it over, presumably to avoid a hand catching it despite being told it was not yet finished and all the other temporary screws were capped with tape or plastic. I was also disappointed to see that they had ‘repaired’ the leaking roof in a way that would not have been satisfactory to the shed so I’ll make it clear now to members that we were not responsible for tacking on another bit of felt without regard to the spacing of the sarking below to which it is nailed, right on the edge of a board and splintering it. Just in case we hear of any comeback!.
On the subject of doing jobs and the vandalism at the shed I think we need to be careful of taking other people’s property on to site until we have that issue sorted. It may be prudent to tell those waiting for bench seats to be repaired that we cannot collect them or repair them in the foreseeable future as they would have to remain outside and we cannot guarantee their security and they may not get them back. We cannot store them inside, especially if we are going to make a start on our roof for the store. Allister, maybe a wee announcement at the Meeting Place to that effect just to make the wider community aware of the issues we and the Scouts are having?
I understand that we are going to have a presentation at the shed tomorrow of a donation from the Church in Colinton for whom we have made a Christmas Nativity and Easter Crosses. John Wilson is our contact here and has taken care to ensure that the items are stored properly after use so that they can be used in following years and it has certainly paid off. Many thanks John, and to the other members who helped with the building and ongoing maintenance.
I will be taking six boxes of kindling slabs to the shed tomorrow, the remnants of the loft clearance we did a couple of weeks ago. Jim took all the good stuff in his car and we put that direct into store. I took the broken bits and offcuts and rather than double handling at the shed took them home, cut them there and boxed them ready for chopping. That way they can go into crates at the shed until ready for bagging into kindling.
I understand the rabbit hutch is now at the primary school, that must have been an interesting move! Hopefully will see some photos soon or are they already on the website, I have not looked at that while up north.
That’s it for this week, take care everyone, and I hope to see some of you tomorrow.
Best Regards
Alister
