Hi
Hello again.
Thanks to Iain for writing the notes last week, I’m going to be away again from 11th - 14th August and probably for a few more weeks on and off after that so you can fight amongst yourselves as to who keeps us all up to date with the progress of the shed. It looks as though by 9th August we will be able to do a bit more socialising/working together although still being cautious.
I’ve made contact with Glasgow re the Defibrillator and they are awaiting batteries and pads. The woman was not at all surprised that I did not want the box to put it in at £550! We can discuss a suitable receptacle when we have it and make our own assessment. I’ve also had an offer from BGS (Jim’s amd my old company) of some fire extinguishers which are operational and will only need recertification in due course. Have responded positively and will arrange to pick them up when they are back in the workshops.
Progress has been made with the shed too since I was last there. More slabs and a drain were done last week and this week Geoff has managed to source and procure materials and the rebuild has started. Today we took delivery of the plywood for the floor and framing for the inside walls and this was offloaded and stored by Geoff, Stewart, Alastair, Stewart and myself. Geoff has started positioning the plywood so that it can be fully screwed down tomorrow, or at least as much as can be done at that time. It is worth Geoff explaining how he has gone about the laying of the new plywood – every old joint has been covered, no two long joins are placed on any one existing joist and there should be minimal creaking or groaning - at least from the floor when the shed is occupied! It’s not simply a case of starting at one corner and filling in with whole sheets until you cut and fill. Thanks for showing me this today Geoff, another tip I either did not know or had not listened to the first time I was told!
Stewart and myself cleared some of the pallets at the entrance corner and made a holding base for the shed construction wood while waiting for the timber to arrive. Alastair, Stewart and myself pecked away at some more ground on the entrance corner to finish the slabs there in due course and we did a general tidy up. Hugh Thomson has started clearing the rough growth below ‘Stewart’s Garden’ which is coming along nicely but was getting encroached by brambles and undergrowth. Tomorrow Stewart hopes to hold a demo of sharpening garden tools to fettle up some of Hugh’s shears and that will be done in the room in the hall while others will be helping under Geoff’s direction. Assuming the weather allows the rest of us can be outside or inside as numbers and interest dictates. Still take your own flask if you want tea or coffee though. We had better wait for the official covid re-opening or we’ll be reported to Nicola!
Tomorrow, if I manage to get all the details together tonight I’ll take along a list and any photos or drawings of items we still have to make/do to complete promises made last year before Covid started. This will also clear away a lot of pallets for the Currie Primary fence after they are repainted, plus a playbus when I get another steering wheel, the ‘wee library’ and I think there’s some more things too. Completing those will also add to the coffers as material costs and donations have been promised.
That’s it for now, Looks as though the weather may not be so kind to us over the forthcoming period but continue to make the most of this great weather, and whatever you are doing keep safe and well. If things continue to progress in the right direction with COVID mitigation we may get back to a new normal and a cup of tea very soon. Take care.
Regards to all
