Hi

Shed notes 17th June
What a fantastic weather week. Yes I know the garden would like some water but that will probably come soon given the Royal Highland Show has started. I’ve been busy getting a few things ready for painting and also filling up some spaces in my daughter’s allotment.
Many thanks to Iain for a smoothly operated AGM last Friday and for the follow up on the website and thanks to everyone for a good turnout..
On Monday Jan and I finished of the ramp to the scout portacabin so that the cement would be set by this Friday. Rab and I had a look at how to put the skirting on to close off the underneath gap and posts were already cut for that. Stewart and I had thought of a potentially simpler way to do it and put in a trial post on Tuesday which seemed to work and will be a lot less faff to do if the theory holds on a few more posts. Stewart has already been on whats app about it. I have put four large pallets and four pieces of planking to one side for the school gates so don’t use any of that for the skirting or other ploys please. RE closing up the underside of the scout portacabin it may be an idea to allow a bit of through air circulation using some of the metal conduit carrier instead of planking in some places. In any event before closing up take out the concrete blocks (not the ones holding up the portacabin!!!) and replace them with the firebricks to keep the soil fabric smooth and even. That way either us or the scouts will have some more useful blocks for other things.
On Tuesday Stewart and I had a look at Keith’s ramp and how it could be removed for reuse at our shed. That is not a problem at all and we will do that in due course. However when we take it away we need to reinstate steps for Keith up to the front door and this is where we have to be careful. The existing steps are still there and the existing rail, which has been modified can also be reinstated. If Keith is happy with that, and I suspect he won’t know until we remove the ramp then that will all be ok. If, as I suspect, the original steps may be too narrow for him then they cannot be altered without making any replacement meet current regulations. This means encroaching on his driveway which he was hoping to avoid. We won’t know until we remove the ramp and see what’s under it but I have a plan B using the steps on the ramp to make a new compliant doorstep, which will encroach on the driveway but may meet Keith’s requirements re access for him but not the car! A point worth remembering folks when we agree to do things!
When we dismantle we will take it all apart and ensure we leave the options for plan B with Keith. The main ramp will fit the shed almost perfectly but the angle and hence railing fixings will have to be adjusted which is why I’m suggesting taking it all apart rather than leaving sections intact which Stewart wanted to do as I think then we’ll try and fit things as is instead of doing it as a new and proper fit.
I will not be at the shed tomorrow as I’m off to Dundee for a long weekend of Antarctic reunions! This has been delayed for two years due to Covid and unfortunately it looks as though the rail strike and air chaos may reduce numbers to less that we had hoped but there are still 100 signed up for the Saturday night meal at the Queens Hotel. Should be easy to find Discovery as she is still floating in Dundee but with a bit of luck we may also get some information on the finding of Endurance as at least two of the survey team who were on the expedition will be there.
I also met up with Geoff this week and gave him a sketch pen from the shed for his work on our portacabin. He's doing away and we had a good chat and I would not be at all worried about calling on his skills again in the future should we require them.
I think that is it for this week, hope you are all getting out and about and managing to do it without too much trepidation.
Regards to all
