Hi

Shed Notes
This week has flown past and suddenly it’s Thursday again! On Monday I went to the Scout Hut to install the defib and then to the portacabin with John to take some further measurements to be sure the roof sheets we were about to order were correct – the measurements were but the sheets option never materialised! Jack and Lyall also popped in on Monday to see how things were coming on and to view John’s planter made by ‘not dismantling’ pallets. Very clever and looks good.
In between doing other things Stewart and myself have spent the week chasing up roof sheets and due to Stewart’s persistence we have a solution after three sets of email quotes ended up as either not available or won’t deliver as far north as Edinburgh! I had a vested interest in all of this for my own shed and there was a person in Edinburgh who Stewart had contacted on Facebook Messenger who had sheets but was extremely difficult to pin down and the sheets could be ‘viewed in the back of my van’ which sort of put us off. However on Wednesday after much messenger contact and getting almost all the answers we felt it was possible there was a solution and we were going to discuss it on Friday still being wary of this back of a van business and the fact that she did not have enough sheets until next week. However I was becoming impatient at lack of progress both with my own shed and the portacabin and the thought of loosing another week was bugging me. Another phone call to Stewart and I agreed to take enough sheets for my shed as an experiment to see if we could make them work for the portacabin too – problem being they are only 10’ long and have a coverage of 760mm. I had worked out that I could live with that and Angelique, the lady selling them suggested that we could get the portacabin requirements by cutting a 10’ sheet and leaving a small space at the top which would be covered by the apex flashing. We would however have to cut ourselves. To cut a very long story short Stewart arranged six sheets to be delivered to me this morning at £25 a sheet delivered. They duly arrived and we decided they would also do for the shed provided I could cut them ok. Angelique was on her way down to Wales to pick up more and could get them to us next week by which time I would know how many of the new size we would need and know if cutting was a sensible option to do ourselves. Discussion on Friday but all positive so far. Although the sheets have less cover so more joins they are the correct thickness and at £25 a sheet (which will make two sheets for the portacabin) compares well with £40.50 for one portacabin sheet same spec from Alexander in Glasgow which is the only other quote request which produced a response. I will do a complete recosting by tomorrow for the roof but we are still on track. We will still have to obtain flashings and fixings but we can get those from Glasgow or locally I think.
You will see from the what’s app photo I sent tonight that between the showers I managed to get my roof on but not completed. Firstly I thought I had plenty fixings but did not so had to get more and got the last two boxes from Toolstation. Then I thought I had the proper cutting disks but found out I only had grinding ones so back to Toolstation again and got a set of disks for my dewalt battery grinder which simply zipped up the sheet no bother at all and left a very neat edge when I watched what I was doing! Putting the half sheets up I realised that the sheets are ‘handed’ with a smaller overlap on one side of the profile. Fortunately three of the four full sheets Stewart and myself put up matched and I decided to live with the other one as is because the wind was beginning to lift the sheets at this point (needed to get them all up and lined up before screwing down).
So lots of little tips learned and everything seems doable so maybe phase two can begin on Monday with cutting rafters to size etc, ordering OSB and sheets. All to be decided on Friday. Looks as though it may be wet so outside activity could be minimal.
In among all of this one potential new member contacted me by phone regarding the shed and after a short conversation said he would turn up tomorrow to see what’s what. I directed him to the website so that he could get a flavour before he arrived.
That’s it for now, hoping the wind does not blow too strongly tonight as I’ve yet to fix the centre of the roof but it is well fixed round all edges and I’ve put a couple of heavy battens across the middle Tomorrow is supposed to be wet again so it will probably be Saturday before I get back to it anyway with shed in the morning and a flu jab at Ingliston in the afternoon.
Regards to all, take care and stay safe
